Partnership with IFAD
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) was established in 1977, as an outcome of the 1974 World Food Conference.
IFAD's mission is to enable poor rural people to overcome poverty. In 1997, IFAD was selected to host the GM by a ministerial-level assembly of over 113 country Parties to the Convention.
As a specialized international financial institution (IFI), IFAD is increasingly cooperating with the GM as an “outsourced” service provider for IFAD’s operations in general and for the implementation of its New Strategic Framework and Operating Model in particular - established to strengthen the integration of IFAD’s country engagement into overarching development programming and partnerships at country level.
The ongoing review of IFAD’s portfolio in terms of SLM activities and UNCCD implementation is one positive illustration of cooperation between the GM and IFAD institution and highlights the comparative advantage of housing the GM at IFAD.
