The process

In-country studies were undertaken to assess:
  • the type and nature of companies operating in South Africa and Kenya;
  • the Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSRs) of the identified companies;
  • the annual budgets for CSR; and
  • the estimated potential resources that could be mobilized for UNCCD implementation.
The studies revealed that many private companies allocate substantial percentages of their annual budgets to social and economic development through their CRS programmes.

Private businesses in South Africa contribute over R1.0 billion (over USD 150 million) annually to social development activities, some of which are relevant to the UNCCD. .

In Kenya, the corporate sector contributed approximately USD 16 million to community level initiatives relevant to the UNCCD, in 2002 alone..

Many of the companies are also willing to provide resources in cash or in kind for UNCCD implementation.

The Governments of South Africa and Kenya, with GM technical and financial support, have engaged in substantive dialogue with the private sector, discussing strategies and modalities for the development and implementation of the PPP.
