Lessons learnt
The following conclusiions can be drawn from the PPP process to date:
- Partnership with the private sector has great potential for mobilizing resources for UNCCD/NAP implementation.
- Partnership with private sector could potentially lead to resource mobilization where private sector is vibrant and has strong Corporate Social Responsibility.
- Governments must be fully committed to working with the private sector for the PPP to be successful. In South Africa, transparency and mutual trust has gone a long way to advancing the PPP.
- Private sector partners operate like “investors”. It is therefore important to make a compelling “business case” for investing in drylands, including the potential benefits, financial viability and possibility for up-scaling.
- Mobilizing resources from the private sector need not only be seen from a philanthropic perspective or as in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility, but also as a “business approach” to achieving Sustainable Land Management (SLM).
- For the private sector to align their business with the development targets of the UNCCD or the NAP, the principles and objectives of the UNCCD must be mainstreamed into their core business.
