PAS Puna
In 1997, the UNCCD Sub-regional Action Programme for the Puna (PAS Puna) came into being, with the aim of harmonizing, complementing and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of National Action Programme (NAP) implementation, through a sub-regional approach to combating desertification, drought and poverty.
Through coordinated action and integrated management of the natural resources of the PUNA country Parties, and by promoting the systematic engagement of other relevant actors, PAS Puna aims to support the sustainable development of the region.
The specific objectives of PAS Puna are:
- to develop a strategy to promote sub-regional integration processes
- to contribute to sustainable local development through pastoralism and livestock breeding [camelida], eco- and ethno-tourism, and development of the production and marketing of local produce
- to promote integrated management of water resources
- to promote sustainable land management
- to encourage the mining sector’s involvement in local development
- to develop support systems to enhance the effectiveness of the Sub-regional Action Programme.
The GM’s financial support to the project “Engagement of the Corporate Mining sector in support of the Puna Americana” has been provided within the framework of the PAS Puna.
