Horn of Africa
The GM has consistently supported sub-regional processes and initiatives to address land degradation and desertification, and has done so in close cooperation with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) – perhaps the most prominent regional economic grouping promoting regional cooperation in priority areas that bear directly on the implementation of the UNCCD.
In March 2006, the IGAD Summit, acknowledging the added value of the GM’s work, requested that the GM and IGAD upscale their partnership efforts, to address the inter-related issues of food security, land degradation and drought.
