Burkina Faso
The gum arabic sector in Burkina Faso is facing very similar opportunities and constraints as those found in Mali. Synergies between the two countries could be leveraged in view of the similar socio-economic and environmental contexts. There are particular opportunities with relation to the Integrated Framework (IF). As in the case of Mali, gum arabic has been identified by the Diagnostic Trade Integration Study (DTIS) as one of the priority sectors for development under the Framework. Lessons learned from Mali could be used to enhance the process in Burkina Faso, particularly with regard to mainstreaming SLM and UNCCD priorities in the development of a national strategy which uses trade as the engine for growth and poverty reduction within the sector.
A streamlined approach between the two countries would also facilitate the promotion of a regional-based initiative for the sustainable development of the gum arabic sector which would also strengthen the national strategies in the two countries.
