Specific objectives

The specific objectives of the initiative are:

to map the efforts being made to combat desertification in each country;
to capture success stories and draw conclusions on the cost of desertification and its implications on poverty reduction strategies;
to develop guidelines in the form of a “road map”, signposting the main steps to reducing poverty by implementing the UNCCD in these countries and elsewhere;
to design a 3-4 year programme of actions to be implemented with GM support at sub-regional and country levels;
to organize workshops for information exchange at international (with the support of TerrAfrica) and sub-regional levels (with CILSS support), and in each country;
to seek the endorsement of the resulting recommendations by Governments and their partners; and
to mainstream the main components of the initiative into countries’ poverty reduction frameworks, so as to facilitate their effective implementation.
