To facilitate the implementation of the Convention, UNCCD member countries are committed to promoting the full use and continued qualitative improvement and rationalization of existing national, bilateral and multilateral funding sources and mechanisms, while at the same time mobilizing additional financial resources from the private sector and other sources, including non-governmental organizations (Article 20).
In this context, the GM has been mandated to identify and monitor funding sources, opportunities, patterns and trends related to the implementation of the Convention.
This information is intended to support resource mobilization, guide policy-making, foster the dialogue and facilitate coordination among interested Parties and relevant organizations involved in the implementation of the Convention (Decision 24/COP.1).
To discharge its mandate, the GM has developed a comprehensive database of authoritative information on desertification-related funding sources, financial trends, projects, donor profiles, development cooperation policies and strategies.
This database is called FIELD: the Financial Information Engine on Land Degradation.
