Strengthening women's capacity to invest in sustainable land management (SLM)

5 September, 2007

Side Event at COP8: Tchém'sou Coalition
During COP8 the GM organized a side event to present the outcomes of the international workshop, Empowering women to invest in sustainable land management. (Bamako, Mali, 5-7 June 2007).

Discussions centred on 3 main issues:
  • gender issues in the context of Convention implementation in general and specifically in terms of strengthening women’s capacity to invest in SLM;
  • gender-aware budgeting by addressing and reflecting gender issues in the budgeting and budget allocation processes; and
  • economic and social indicators for monitoring and evaluating efforts to combat desertification.
The Tchém'sou Coalition, whose objectives and operational plan have been the subject of extensive debate, has decided to seize the opportunity provided by the Open Dialogue Session (ODS) on 11 September to increase UNCCD country Partners’ awareness of gender issues.

Another aspect of the Coalition’s work is to lobby the Committee on Science and Technology (CST) to convince it to incorporate into its programme of work the identification and implementation of into economic and social indicators designed to ensure that gender issues are reflected in action programmes to combat desertification.

The debate highlighted the need to draw upon the experience of existing CBO networks to position actions to mobilize resources in the context of  multi-stakeholder partnerships.
