Screening of 'Villages on the Front Line' on BBC World TV

"Villages on the Front Line" documents how ordinary men and women in some of the poorest communities worldwide are finding ingenious ways to combat desertification and improve their livelihoods.
This series has been produced as part of the 2006 International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD) campaign, to focus attention on the struggle against land degradation and water shortages in affected countries around the globe.
"Villages on the Front Line" is a joint initiative co-financed by the Global Mechanism, IFAD, UNEP, SDC, IIED, Conservation International, One Planet Pictures, and Web-TV.
It is hoped this joint initiative will help to raise awareness of the nature and scale of land degradation, sensitize public audiences to the issues and opportunities at stake, and mobilize resources for sustainable land management in vulnerable drylands.
Eight documentaries have been filmed in remote areas of China, Costa Rica, Haiti, India, Jordan, Morocco, Niger, Spain and Tanzania. They will be shown on BBC World TV between 10 November and 29 December 2006, as follows:
- China: 10 November
- Jordan: 17 November
- Tanzania: 24 November
- Morocco: 1 December
- The Wider Caribbean: 8 December
- Niger: 15 December
- Spain: 22 December
- India: 29 December
Viewing times are: Fridays at 2030 GMT. Repeated on Saturdays at 0630, Mondays at 1030, Tuesdays at 1530 & 1930 (showing in South Asia only at this time), Wednesdays at 0230 (not Asia Pacific or South Asia) & 0830.
