IFAD grant to bolster GM’s work on designing and implementing integrated financing strategies
8 May, 2008
The GM is delighted to announce that the Executive Board of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has cleared a grant for 2008 totalling USD 1.25 million which will contribute to the financing of Phase I of the GM’s ‘Programme for Designing Integrated Financing Strategies (DIFS) for UNCCD Implementation in Selected Countries of Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean.’
The DIFS programme aims to develop comprehensive investment frameworks in recipient countries that will increase financing for adaptation to climate change and sustainable land management. Achievement of this goal will also contribute significantly to rural development and poverty alleviation.
Phase I, of a two-phase programme, will focus on the enhancement, adaptation and execution of the DIFS training programme by the GM through four subregional workshops in the following subregions: the Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR), the Andean region, and South and South-East Asia. Following the subregional workshops, in 2009 it is expected that the focus will shift towards designing and implementing integrated financing strategies (IFSs) in the selected countries (Brazil, Cambodia, Ecuador, Nepal, Peru, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Uruguay).
The initiative will be implemented by the GM in close coordination with IFAD country programme managers, along with national governmental bodies and civil society organizations.
The programme will be bound on the strategic alliance and mutual benefits of close cooperation between IFAD and the GM, with joint efforts directed towards the benefit of poor rural communities affected by land degradation.
