GM supports the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP)
20 March, 2007
During CRIC.5 the GM met with the Focal Points of the countries that make up the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) - namely, Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tome & Principe - to evaluate progress and discuss the next steps with regard to the CPLP partnership in support of UNCCD implementation.
This follows discussions between the CPLP countries on how to develop strategies to address UNCCD implementation in a more integrated, coordinated and comprehensive way, and a proposal at COP.7 in Nairobi, for CPLP country capacities to be strengthened through a partnership platform for this purpose.
The GM is supporting the CPLP with a proposal for South-South co-operation with the CPLP countries, centred on sharing knowledge and lessons learnt, at local, regional and national levels. This potential initiative would not be implemented as isolated processes but would be embedded in broader country planning and programmatic frameworks depending on country context and specificities.
The meeting agreed to hold consultations with Governments and development partners in order to reach a common understanding on the best entry points for programming and to conduct a brief stocktaking exercise on current SLM-related activities, including issues and options.
The CPLP also decided to develop a “road map” with a view to reaching agreements between Government and development partners and to define roles and responsibilities for the partnership platform.
