GM proposes new guidelines for financial reporting

6 September, 2007

Mr Simone Quatrini, the GM’s Coordinator for Policy & Investment Analysis presented an innovative methodology to improve financial reporting on programmes, projects and activities related to the implementation of the Convention, to the 6th session of the Committee for the Review of Implementation of the Convention (CRIC6).

The methodology was requested by the Ad Hoc Working Group established by 7th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP7) to improve the quality and formats of reports on UNCCD implementation.

It builds on country experiences in elaborating national reports on their UNCCD-related activities and on specific criteria and indicators developed by the OECD´s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) and international financial institutions, such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

It is expected that this methodology will enable countries and organizations reporting to the COP to utilize a standardized financial annex for reporting on programmes and projects related to the implementation of the Convention.

The proposal was debated by the CRIC in a plenary session on 6 September and subsequently in a contact group.  Portugal, speaking on behalf of the European Union, congratulated the GM for its substantive input and suggested that the UNCCD’s reporting guidelines be revised for consideration at COP9 in consultation with the GM.
