GM co-sponsors GreenFacts' work on desertification

16 novembre, 2006

GreenFacts
GreenFacts is an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to bring complex scientific consensus reports on health and the environment to the reach of non-specialists.

Its work stems from the belief that state-of-the-art scientific knowledge is of vital importance for substantiating constructive debates and informed decision-making. This knowledge is not always readily available or is unreliable, since the sources of such information are often stakeholder organizations that tend to defend their own interests and experts who are inclined to voice personal views.

GreenFacts maintains that impartial knowledge on these issues is best provided by scientific consensus reports, produced by authoritative international organizations, such as FAO, IARC, UNEP, WHO and the European Commission. These reports, however, are generally long, complex, and written in expert jargon.

It therefore works to popularize scientific knowledge by summarizing these reports clearly and accurately, using plain language and without taking position in the surrounding debates. By so doing, it aspires be the preferred on-line source of scientific information for journalists, decision-makers, educators and other stakeholders.

It is this role that GreenFacts plays in knowledge management that has attracted the GM’s interest and the decision to co-sponsor its work on desertification.

In this context, GreenFacts has recently published “Facts on Desertification”, a mini-website and brochure on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Desertification Synthesis, one of the leading scientific consensus reports produced in 2005, which addresses the links between desertification and the unsustainable use of resources.
