GM signs cooperation agreement with the Republic of Mali

11 June, 2008

On the occasion of the High-Level Policy Dialogue held in Bonn on 27 May 2008, the Minister of the Environment and Sanitation of Mali and the Managing Director of the Global Mechanism (GM) signed a cooperation agreement between the Government of the Republic of Mali and the GM.

Through this agreement, the GM has undertaken to provide technical and financial assistance to the Government during 2008 and 2009. Financial support will total six hundred and twenty-six thousand United States Dollars (USD 626000) - some three hundred million CFA Francs.

This agreement reaffirms the GM’s readiness to play its assigned role in implementing the Ten-year Strategic Plan and Framework to enhance UNCCD implementation (2008-2018), and particularly in achieving Objective 5 on financing and technology transfer.

The resources provided to the Republic of Mali will be used to assist Government in developing an integrated investment framework aimed at mobilizing domestic, bilateral and multilateral resources to increase the effectiveness and impact of actions in the sustainable land management sector, by fully supporting the implementation of the TerrAfrica Initiative at the national level.

The GM’s financial assistance will also be employed to identify and draw upon innovative sources of finance and financial mechanisms to combat desertification and land degradation within the private sector (cotton industry), by bringing market-based mechanisms into play (marketing and trade in Gum Arabic) and by taking up the financial opportunities available within the framework of climate change adaptation and mitigation.
