Workshop in Burkina Faso on civil society organizations’ participation in promoting SLM

23 April, 2008 - 24 April, 2008
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

The UNCCD calls for civil society organizations (CSOs) at all levels to become involved in policy design, planning and programme implementation, based on their experiences and links with dryland communities.

In Burkina Faso, civil society organizations (CSOs) are important stakeholders in supporting farmers and pastoralists to adopt sustainable land use and management practices, and implementing measures to control and reverse land degradation.

In this context, a workshop is being organized by the Ministry of Environment with the support of the Global Mechanism in Ouagadougou on 23 and 24 April, bringing together a range of stakeholders, including more than 40 CSOs from various regions of the country.

The workshop will review and discuss the results of a study on the participation of CSOs in combating desertification and promoting sustainable land management (SLM). It will also be an opportunity to identify areas of common interest and coordinate CSO actions to advocate increased support for sustainable land use and management.

This event is part of a broader country programme to increase financial resource allocation for combating desertification through capacity development and mainstreaming SLM into development frameworks.
