Regional Forum on UNCCD Implementation in the SADC Region

30 July, 2007 - 1 August, 2007
Gaborone, Botswana

The Southern African Development Community
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat, the GM, the United States Agency for International Development FRAME Network (USAID-FRAME) and the World Conservation Union Regional Office for Southern Africa (IUCN-ROSA) are convening a regional forum in Gaborone, Botswana, from 30 July to 1 August 2007, on UNCCD implementation in the SADC region.

The forum, coordinated by the SADC Secretariat, draws on outcomes of the USAID-FRAME and IUCN-ROSA assessment of community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) as a strategy for environmental conservation and rural development, and on emerging opportunities for UNCCD implementation in the sub-region.

The overall objective of the forum is to agree upon a regional strategy for successful implementation of the Southern African Sub-Regional Action Programme (SRAP).

The specific objectives are to:
  • take stock of the major challenges to SRAP implementation;
  • raise decision-makers’ awareness of the impacts of CBNRM on poverty alleviation, economic growth, governance and the protection of large mammals and other natural resources;
  • share lessons from the regional CBNRM assessment, and outline a long-term cooperation mechanism involving UNCCD Focal Points, CBNRM practitioners and other partners working to combat desertification;
  • facilitate information exchange and consultations among partners, and strengthen partnership arrangements for promoting the UNCCD and sustainable land management (SLM) in the sub-region; and
  • agree on a sub-regional strategy for mobilizing and coordinating resources for UNCCD implementation.
The expected outcomes are:
  • a roadmap for implementing the SRAP, including agreements between SADC Member States and development partners; and
  • a strategic partnership with a broader range of SADC’s development partners, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector, to secure sustained resources for UNCCD/SRAP implementation.
