International Workshop on Mainstreaming the Environment into National Development Frameworks

The United Nations Development Programme Drylands Development Centre (UNDP/DDC), in collaboration with GM and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is convening an International workshop on Mainstreaming the Environment, with a special focus on how to mainstream drylands issues into National Development Frameworks, from 18 to 20 June in Bamako, Mali.
 
The objectives of the workshop are:
  • to discuss the challenges and opportunities for mainstreaming the environment/drylands issues into national development frameworks
  • to share experiences and best practices acquired in the mainstreaming process
  • to review, discuss and validate generic draft mainstreaming guidelines developed, based on lessons learnt.
The workshop will also contribute to building and improving partnerships for supporting mainstreaming initiatives in the countries.
 
Participants will include decision-makers from 21 countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, international organizations and United Nations agencies working on mainstreaming issues, civil society organizations, and donor partners.
 
The Workshop will be structured in four sessions, as follows:

Session 1: Country Experiences on Mainstreaming Drylands into National Development Frameworks.  8 countries (Argentina, Barbados, China, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Morocco and Tanzania) will present case studies based on lessons learnt from their experiences on the environmental mainstreaming process.
 
Session 2: Global Lessons Leaned on Mainstreaming. A summary report based on synthesis of 21 country case studies will be presented. The report will highlight the main challenges and lessons documented by the countries.
 
Session 3: Generic Guidelines on Mainstreaming formulated on the basis of the experiences of the countries present will be discussed and fine tuned.
 
Session 4: Partnership Framework in Support of Country-level Mainstreaming. Proposals on how to forge strong partnerships between government and various national and international organizations to support the mainstreaming process, will be introduced and discussed.
