Expert consultation on desertification, migration and local development in Sahel-Saharan states

The Global Mechanism, in partnership with the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CENSAD) Secretariat, is organizing an experts’ consultation on desertification, migration and local development in Tripoli (Libya) from 26 to 29 November 2007. The consultation is being organized in within the framework of SolArid, the GM’s South-to-south Cooperation Programme, and is a direct follow-up to the International workshop on socio-economic costs of desertification held in Rome in December 2006.
The consultation will address the impact of forced migration as a direct consequence of natural resource degradation and poverty in the Sahel-Saharan region, at local, regional and international levels.
The consultation aims to:
- facilitate a better understanding of migratory flows, its socio-economic and cultural dimensions and its impact on the economies of the region;
- clarify the national strategies adopted in response to natural resource degradation;
- promote a convincing line of argument to be used with national decision makers and development partners (in particular the European Union) to effectively mobilize support for investment in the sustainable management of land in arid areas, in response to migration; and
- Reinforce ongoing efforts to reduce poverty within local communities affected by desertification and drought.
The organizers have invited 60 experts from Sahel-Saharan countries, international agencies, bilateral institutions, local communities and Northern and Southern NGOs, to attend the consultation and actively contribute to the discussions. The outcomes of this consultation will be shared with interested parties and posted on this website.
