Désertif'Actions - International Forum on Desertification & Civil Society
21 September, 2006 - 23 September, 2006
Montpellier, France
More than 200 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) involved in the sustainable development of drylands will meet in Montpellier, France from 21-23 September 2006, to exchange ideas and communicate the importance of their work to a broad audience of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), local authorities, international institutions and the private sector, in the framework of the International Year of Deserts and Desertification.
The GM is supporting this initiative to highlight the participative role civil society plays in the national and international implementation process of actions in dryland areas. The specific objectives of the Forum are to give drylands a more prominent position on national and international political agendas, to explore the innovative economic potential of drylands for increasing the income levels of dryland communities, and to strategize on the role of CSOs and their national/international networks in these processes.
The Forum recommendations together with a general statement on the intrinsic value of drylands, their importance for sustaining large populations and the role of CSOs in dryland management will feed into the final Montpellier Declaration to be presented at the High Level Conference on Deserts and Desertification (Heads of States and Governments), in October 2006 in Algiers.
