29 April, 2008 - 30 April, 2008
Tegucigalpa, Honduras

In Central America, civil society organizations (CSOs) play an important role in supporting rural communities in adopting sustainable land use and management practices, calling on governments to provide incentives for communities in dry and degraded lands to invest in controlling and reversing land degradation.
The International NGO Network on Desertification in Latin America and the Caribbean (RIOD-LAC), established in response to the UNCCD’s commitment to engaging CSOs at all levels of policy design, planning and implementation, is organizing a workshop on 29 and 30 April in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
The workshop will be facilitated by the Coordinadora Indígena y Campesina de Agroforestería Comunitaria (ACICAFOC), with the GM’s support and will bring together 15 CSO representatives from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The purpose of the workshop is to develop a strategy to increase CSO participation in policy-making, planning and financing processes in the context of the UNCCD, desertification and sustainable land management (SLM) at the subregional and national levels.
The workshop will be an opportunity for CSOs to identify actions and mechanisms for coordinating their efforts and to develop a strategic workplan to increase their participation in the implementation of national and subregional action plans to combat desertification (NAPs and SRAPs).
The substance of the meeting is linked to a broader subregional initiative to develop a financing platform for UNCCD implementation and SLM, and programmes to support the development of national integrated financing strategies in several countries in the region.
