The State Forestry Administration of the People's Republic of China (SFA) and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) are organizing an International Conference on Combating Desertification, from 22-24 January 2008, in Beijing, China.
The Conference will bring together senior government decision-makers, representatives of local authorities, officials from the United Nations system, researchers, experts and practitioners, to share lessons learned and best practices in combating desertification. The event will provide opportunities for ministerial statements and thematic panel discussions, with the objective of guiding and facilitating an in-depth review of barriers and constraints to combating desertification, the policy options and practical measures available.
Several panel presentations will be made by experts from national and international organizations on the frontline of combating land degradation and desertification.
