Description
UNDP provides support to over 160 countries worldwide, in the areas of crisis prevention and recovery; democratic governance; energy and environment; HIV/AIDS; and poverty reduction. The issues of gender equality and women's empowernent are also highly prioritized.
Projects in all geographical areas are eligible to receive financial support from UNDP: Africa; Arab States; Asia and the Pacific; Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS); Latin America; and the Caribbean.
The Drylands Development Centre is the thematic window established by UNDP for activities related to sustainable land management. Its activities are implemented through the Integrated Drylands Development Programme. Financing schemes under this programme are currently active in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Arab States. The Centre can support activities in the sub-sectors of decentralized governance of natural resources and drought risk management. The overall objectives identified in this specific area are the fulfilment of the Millennium Development Goals and the implementation of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
UNDP takes part as an administrator in various Multilateral Trust Funds and Joint Programmes, among which:
- MDG Achievement Fund to accelerate efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals;
- MDG Carbon Facility for the marketing of projects for greenhouse gases reduction in developing countries;
- Africa Adaptation Programme for the mainstreaming of adaptation to climate change into the development agenda on a country level;
- GEF-managed Small Grants Programme;
- Poverty-Environment Initiative, together with UNEP, which explores the linkages between the two dimensions of poverty and environmental degradation; and
- Green Commodities Facility for the scaling-up of sustainable production and sale of commodities.
