Who we are

The Global Mechanism (GM) provides advisory services on finance to developing country Parties to the Convention to assist them in up-scaling public finance and private sector investments in sustainable land management (SLM) and rural development activities.

The GM was established by Article 21 of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and began its operations in October 1998. As a subsidiary body of the UNCCD its mandate is to "increase the effectiveness and efficiency of existing financial mechanisms…[and]…to promote actions leading to the mobilization and channelling of substantial financial resources to affected developing-country Parties".

The GM’s work is based on this mandate and the decisions of the Conference of Parties to the UNCCD, and its approach to resource mobilization is fully aligned with the 10-Year Strategic Plan and Framework for the Implementation of the UNCCD (the “10-Year Strategy”), adopted in 2007.
