Where we are hosted

The Convention highlights that the GM should be hosted within an organization whose mandate, objectives and capacity should substantially complement the work of the GM. As the global agency at the forefront of tackling land degradation and reducing rural poverty in countries most affected by desertification, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) was selected to house the GM in 1997, by a ministerial-level assembly of over 113 country Parties to the Convention.

IFAD continues to be the largest contributor to the GM’s operations with its contribution to date totalling USD 10 million. The Fund provides all administrative services to the GM and contributes in-kind to the administration of all voluntary financial contributions to GM’s operations.

IFAD’s portfolio and its expertise and knowledge in financing projects and programmes has proven to be an enormous asset for the implementation of the Convention and to the impact of the GM. IFAD’s broad base of collaboration with other internationalfinancing institutions and development agencies has greatly facilitated the GM’s work

IFAD’s Strategic Framework and Operating Model has strengthened IFAD’s country engagement and increased the scope for cooperation with the GM. As a specialized international financial institution (IFI), IFAD is increasingly engaging with the GM as to increase the integration of IFAD’s portfolio into larger rural development programmes at country level and to increase the ratio of co-finance secured through climate change finance and other sources.
